  • 7-segment displays are made up of 7 LEDs arranged in the shape of a number "8". By turning on specific segments, different numbers or letters can be formed. The segments are typically labeled a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and a decimal point (sometimes).

Digit Height: 0.56 inches

  • The height of the individual digit is 0.56" (14.22 mm). This is a commonly used size for general-purpose displays, making it readable in many applications.

Number of Digits: 1 Digit

  • The module consists of one 7-segment digit, allowing it to display a single digit at a time, ranging from 0 to 9 (or in some cases, A-F in hexadecimal displays).

Color:

  • Most commonly available in red, but other colors such as green, yellow, and blue are also available depending on the model.
  • Red is the most commonly used color due to its high visibility and low power consumption.

Operating Voltage:

  • Typically operates at 5V DC, but some models support voltages in the range of 3.3V to 12V DC.
  • Power consumption for a single segment can be 20mA to 30mA, so the display as a whole will require a suitable power source.

Common Type: Common Anode (C.A.)

  • In a Common Anode (C.A.) display, all the anodes of the segments are connected together. To light up a segment, a low (ground) signal is applied to the corresponding segment pin.
  • Common Cathode (C.C.) displays work similarly but with a reversed polarity; the cathodes of all the segments are connected together, and segments are turned on by applying a high signal to the segment pin.

Drive Method:

  • Multiplexed Display: This is typically a multiplexed display, meaning that the display is controlled by switching between segments in rapid succession. This makes it appear as though all segments are lit at the same time, though in reality, each digit is illuminated in sequence.
  • External Drivers: You can use external drivers or ICs, like 74HC595 (shift registers) or TM1637, to control the 7-segment displays from a microcontroller.
